Joint Entrance Examination (Main and Advanced)
The route into engineering at the NITs, IIITs and IITs. Two exams in sequence, with the second open only to those who clear the first.
What it is for
JEE Main is used for admission to the NITs, IIITs and other centrally funded technical institutions, and by many state and private colleges. It also acts as the qualifying filter for JEE Advanced, which is the sole route into the IITs. The two are a sequence, not alternatives.
Conducted by National Testing Agency (Main) and the IITs on rotation (Advanced).
How it is structured
JEE Main
An objective examination in physics, chemistry and mathematics, conducted by the NTA in more than one session per year, with the better result normally counting. There is a separate paper for architecture and planning candidates.
JEE Advanced
A considerably harder examination taken only by candidates who clear the Main cutoff, conducted by one of the IITs on a rotating basis. It rewards depth and multi-step reasoning rather than speed over familiar patterns.
Counselling and seat allocation
Admission is through a centralised counselling process based on rank and preferences. Clearing the exam is not the end of the process.
Who it is for
School students in the science stream aiming at engineering, typically preparing through the final two years of school. Eligibility rules, attempt limits and reservation criteria are set by the conducting bodies and are not reproduced here — check the official sources.
What preparation involves
Most serious candidates prepare across two years alongside school, and the binding constraint is depth rather than coverage. The exam rewards being able to recognise which method a problem needs, which makes mixed practice far more useful than working through one chapter at a time. Past papers are the single most informative resource; start them earlier than feels comfortable.
The most common preparation mistake is confusing familiarity with capability — working through solved examples until they feel obvious, then finding that an unfamiliar arrangement of the same concepts is unrecognisable in the hall.
Mixed, timed practice against past papers exposes that gap early, which is precisely why it is worth doing before you feel ready.
